What are the most disturbing nursery rhymes you know?

March 12th, 2010

Like, Ring Around The Rosie is about the bubonic plague. "We all fall down" is referring to dropping dead basically, and "pocket full of posse" is referring to flowers that were put in tissues to cover up the smell of dead bodies.

Nursery Rhymes are usually about political issues that seem inappropriate for children but are put into a simple rhyme.

So list the most disturbing one you know and tell why.

"There once was a girl
who had a little curl
right in the middle of her forehead.

And when she was good,
she was very, very good,
but when she was bad, she was horrid!"

I always wondered how this was ever put into a children's book... later on I realized it seemed to symbolize bi-polar disorder... not exactly rainbows and butterflies!

I heard one once that I have never been able to find again. It’s the original version of "All the pretty little ponies," and has a part where it talks about a pony with "flies picking out his eyes and he’s crying for his mammy." It’s supposed to be about slavery in the united states, I believe… but I’ve never been able to find it since I first heard it.

Supposedly, "Mistress Mary, Quite Contrary" is about Mary I’s torture and murder of Protestants.

Mistress Mary, quite contrary -> This part’s obvious, I think
How does your garden grow -> Garden being another term for "graveyard"
With silver bells and cockle shells -> Torture instruments (i.e. cockle shells = thumb screws)
And pretty maids all in a row -> Iron maidens, torture chambers; could also refer to executed people

This is just an interpretation, obviously.

Beware the stare of Mary Shaw,
She had no children only dolls,
and if you see her in your dreams,
    beware you never ever scream,
or she will rip your tongue out at the scene.

That one scared the crap out of me when i saw the movie "Dead Silent"
