Who are newspaper star sign astrologer kidding?

February 14th, 2010

They only interprete a very tiny portion of the entire horoscope. Who is letting these frauds getting away with this nonsense?

Want to know why horoscopes are in the entertainment section of Yahoo Answers? Because that is what it is. The serious newspapers did not bother for a long time. Now everyone has at least one.
Horoscopes writers in newspapers are syndicated, just like the comics and puzzles are. Often on the same pages. This is one of the first exposures to astrology along with word of mouth. The foot in the door so to speak. Even though there is no consistency (my paper has has not one but two side by side) of these "astrologers" if newspaper removed them, their phones would be ringing of the hook.

Scientist and author Richard Dawkins commented in an article,
"Scientific truth is too beautiful to be sacrificed for the sake of light entertainment or money. Astrology is an aesthetic affront. It cheapens astronomy, like using Beethoven for commercial jingles. By existing law neither Beethoven nor nature can sue, but perhaps existing law could be changed. If the methods of Astrologers were really shown to be valid it would be a fact of signal importance for science. Under such circumstances astrology should be taken seriously indeed. But if - as all indications agree - there is not a smidgen of validity in any of the things that astrologers so profitably do, this, too, should be taken seriously and not indulgently trivialised. We should learn to see the debauching of science for profit as a crime"

For "professional" astrologers there is no real objection. Anything that can get people to use them is welcome. Scientific morals don't exist for belief oriented concepts that are made up.

Edit: Nope I would get old ones, cut them out, and pick them random. Who would know?

I see the importance of the sun sign. But are the newspaper astrologers not causing the science more harm than good? Imagine a different kind of horoscope which takes much more interest in the impact upon the world eg Pluto moving in Capricorn. Hmm
