How do you cope with new neighbors, their 14 children (I’m not kidding) and the basketball hoop?

March 12th, 2010

Now that school is out, all day, every day, they bounce that basket ball. I'm talking dozens of children and HOURS of constant noise.

MAKE NO MISTAKE!!!

I understand they get to play, where ever, what ever and for how ever long they want to. I get that! Besides, if they weren't playing ball they'd be vandalizing the neighborhood.
That's NOT my question!!!

My question is, how do you deal with the noise?
What has worked for you?
It's driving me absolutely crazy.
Moving is not an option for me right now, (it will be in the near future though), but any ideas would be great.

If I were you I'd just listen to music of your choosing all day if possible. Turn it up [you know what I mean not so loud that it's blaring or hurting your ears but to a level that you can maybe still hear the ball but the music is louder] so that it sort of drowns out the noise. Another thing that helps [and will keep you house cool during the summer months AND lower your electric bill] is get some window coverings if you don't already have them and keep them down. I'm talking about shades and curtains. Yes, your house will be dark but you can use lamps in every room you go into. It will help keep the noise out of your home.

I really feel for you and I'm very glad that you aren't complaining but asking for honest help. Good on you! I hope this helps! Best of Luck!!

EDIT--I just realized another thing that will help. Osculating fans. They are just loud enough that it will lessen the outdoor noise BUT not too loud that they are annoying. I'll keep on thinking and add more if I figure something else out.

Talk to your landlord if you rented, or you bough, file a police report for disturbance. We did that and it took care of them. For sleeping, try a noise macheine. Sounds like it won’t work, but I have 11 chirpers and whenever they would rather not settle down, it works fine! You could also try getting an MP3 with headphones!

**talk to the parents and respectfully ask them to limit their noise level to a certain degree (as in: NO yelling that is loud enough for the neighbors to hear, No screaming that’s loud enough to hear, NO bothering the neighbors).
**tell the parents that you would like them to ASK their children to quiet down a bit and that you would limit how loud people would be when you’d have people over at your house for a party

try to talk with your neighbour first

at least she won’t be in shock if all so suddenly a police come or the landlord or whoever….

    things might turn sour…

maybe they are used to that kind of noise, so since u said nothing, maybe they thought they are not bothering you….

I am having the same problem right now with a group of about 5 boys next door and their fire works(we live in the country). For about 2 days they were shooting them off ALL THE TIME! We simply told them our schedule and our kids’ and asked them not to make so much noise during those times. If they want to shoot the fireworks at those times they are more then welcome to go to the opposite side of our home where we can not hear when we are resting.
It seems to be working. Or you can try turning up the stereo with some of your fav tunes playing to drowned them out.(Just remember to also be respectful of other neighbors and not go too loud)! Good luck!

well,if you can beat them, join them.start by handing them some lemonade, juice, anything.bake some brownies,i dont see why not.then while you delivering your trojan horse, ask them when will the game be over, because sometimes is hard to cope with the noise, etc, etc.you sure you dont need a workout? play a while.then you can also let them know you are about to get some rest.if none of this work, its time to talk to the adult in charge. good luck!!!

ask if you can join in.
    start to BBQ eels.
Play Bobby Sherman albums really loud
Invite them all over for milk and cookies and serve them gin.
these are all the thoughts that went through my mind here.
What I ended up doing? nothing- i reminded myself that they will grow up soon and move on. Play classical music in the house softly in the background. Or the radio between stations so all you hear is "white noise" Good luck- it’s a long summer ahead for us.

If you have a neighborhood organization try to get involved , suggest that a basketball court and playground built sort off out of the way of everyones houses… in the middle or outers of the neighborhood..or explain your issue to your neighbor and maybe they could enroll them in afterschool care….

You can put up high hedges to help buffer the noise and buy new energy efficient windows (always aluminum never vinyl windows). the cheapest thing to do would be to just buy some of those ear plugs that let in a little noise. their kids, it’s summer and they should be having fun.

OMG, we have just one with a basketball right across the street and the sound drives me crazy! Put on some music or the TV and try to tune it out. Eventually, it will just become a part of the soundtrack of your life, just like your child’s most annoying toys did!

turn on the radio loud enough to block it out. Wear ear plugs, spend time out and about,

We live next to (and I do mean physically, RIGHT next to) our neighborhood playground.
I keep the windows closed and blinds down on that side of the house. We have a wall of tall, thick shrubs to absorb the noise and I play my music at a reasonable level. There is also a curfew that starts at 9 pm. Is there any way you can create a fence or set up some tall potted plants? FWIW my inlaws live next to railroad tracks. You get used to noise quickly. Good luck!
